New jobs on the way should offset losses

GREENSBORO — TE Connectivity on Thursday threw another 620  jobs on the economic slag heap that smothers recovery for the Triad and the nation.

In the past year, thousands of the region’s workers have lost their jobs as the local unemployment rate remains above a “catastrophic” 9 percent, as one economist called it.

Guilford school board approves new donation policy

GREENSBORO — Parents at Millis Road Elementary will now be able to raise money for a new gymnasium after the Guilford County Board of Education approved a new donation policy on Thursday.

But fundraisers at the Jamestown school were disappointed to learn they will not be able to promise naming rights as a way of attracting major donors.

About 25 dogs auditioned Sunday for a walk-on role in the Greensboro Ballet’s special Dec. 14 “MUTTcracker” performance of its holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.”

Police: Cadillac was involved in hit-and-run accidents before crash

GREENSBORO -- Investigators said a 1985 Cadillac that was in a rollover accident in north Guilford County this afternoon was likely involved in multiple accidents in Greensboro minutes earlier.

The Highway Patrol responded to a rollover accident on Church St., just south of U.S. 158, about 5:30 p.m., troopers said.

GREENSBORO — Mayor Robbie Perkins owes tens of thousands of dollars in back federal income taxes and faces foreclosure on the
Irving Park house he owns with his estranged wife.

The federal government is seeking $86,955 in unpaid income taxes from 2010, according to a lien filed by the Internal Revenue Service earlier this year.

Greensboro driver dies after his car hits utility pole

GREENSBORO — A 72-year-old Greensboro man died after his car crashed into a utility pole Saturday night.

Leonard Poindexter was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala east on Creek Ridge Road when he lost control of his car, which ran off the road to the right and crashed into a utility pole, according to police.

Poindexter was pronounced dead at the scene.

GREENSBORO — A Greensboro man was charged Sunday with statutory rape.

Alvin Lemuell Fewell Jr., 19, of 3 Franklin McCain Court is charged with statutory rape/sex offense, according to an arrest warrant.

The victim was 15 years old, the warrant states. The incident occurred on Oct. 28.

FRANKLINVILLE — An Asheboro woman died after she crashed while passing another vehicle near Franklinville in Randolph County on Sunday afternoon, the Highway Patrol said.

Kitty Lindley Reed, 45 was driving her Dodge car west on Low Bridge Road about 4:10 p.m., when she passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone, troopers said.
